Most investors now understand the benefit of a truly diversified and balanced portfolio. A major empirical study carried out in 2006 by ‘Pulvermacher and Michaud’ confirmed what many investors have known for some time. It concluded that ‘Gold adds diversifying power across much of a long-term portfolio’s risk spectrum’ that ‘Gold’s diversification properties stem from its negative to low correlation with other major asset classes, including other commodities’ and that ‘there was evidence that the asset may stabilise riskier portfolios during declining financial markets and poor economic climates’. For those that took note of this survey in 2006 it is now clear to see the stability that they could have benefited from over the last 12 months in light of the global turmoil we have seen. With the huge influx of currency being created by stimulus packages across most of the world’s developed economies we anticipate that Gold as a hedge against inflation will become an invaluable asset in the months and years ahead.
